Two new Chair Professors joined CityU on 1 August: Professor Frances F. Yao of Department of Computer Science and Professor Wu Hung-I of the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics.
Professor Wu Hung-I, Professor (Chair) of Chinese, obtained his BA, MA and PhD from National Taiwan University (NTU). Before joining the University, he was Full Professor in the Department of Chinese at NTU (1971-1994) and Professor (Chair) of Chinese Language and Literature at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (1994-2003). A brilliant researcher, Professor Wu's publications have covered an astounding range in terms of time periods and genres in the history of Chinese literature. He has published works on ancient poetry and philosophy such as the Confucian Analects and the Book of Songs. His 1998 anthology Qingdai Wenxue Piping Lunji gives persuasive arguments on the literary reconstruction of the Ming-Qing literati culture. Professor Wu has also contributed a great deal to Chinese language education in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and serves as a member to several educational committees and editorial boards.
