CityU ranks among top 200 universities in the world

CityU ranks among the best 200 universities in the world, according to a comparison by The Times in the UK. Being the 198^th on the top 200 ranking, CityU is  the fourth highest Hong Kong institution, and is one of the top 10 Chinese universities in the Greater China area on the list.

 

“This is surely a boost for us, to be recognized by The Times, an established newspaper in the UK,” said Professor H K Chang, CityU’s President. “The fact that CityU has been repeatedly recognized as one of the major league institutions internationally, such as by two ShanghaiJiaotongUniversity’s rankings two years in a row, proves that we really have achieved something in a short span of 20 years.”

 

The ranking is the first of its kind by The Times Higher Education Supplement to compare the world’s top universities. Five indicators have been chosen to reflect strength in teaching, research and international reputation. The first performance indicator, weighted at half of the total score, is based on peer review. Some 1,300

academics in 88 countries were asked to name the top institutions in the areas and subjects on which they felt able to make an informed judgment.

 

Another 20% is accounted for by a ranking of research impact, which is calculated by measuring citations per faculty member. A further 20% is a measure of faculty-to-student ratio. This indicator, according to The Times, is a “simple and robust one that captures a university’s commitment to teaching”. The other two measures, each at 5% of the total, are designed to encapsulate a university’s international orientation: percentage of overseas students; and percentage of international faculty.

 

Highest on the list of top 10 Chinese universities in the Greater China area is Beijing University (17), followed by Hong Kong University (39), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (42), Tsing Hua University (61), Chinese University of Hong Kong (84), National Taiwan University (102), China University of Science and Technology (154), Nanjing University (192), Fudan University (195), and City University of Hong Kong (198).
