City University of Hong Kong (CityU) named Lecture Theatre 11 after Dr John Chan Chun-tung, Chairman of Chaifa Holdings, at a ceremony on 12 October in appreciation of Dr Chan’s significant contributions to society and his support for the University’s long-term development.

A successful entrepreneur, Dr Chan has served in several public posts over the years. In addition to being a committee member of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, he is a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and a member of the Hong Kong Government’s Central Policy Unit. Dr Chan has received several awards for his contributions to industry, including Young Industrialist Award of Hong Kong and selection as one of the Top Ten Talented Founders of Business in China. He also received CityU’s first Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009.

After receiving his Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) degree from CityU in 2006, Dr Chan was among the first cohort of graduates from the Doctor of Business Administration at the College of Business. He shared his extensive experience about starting a business and working in the fashion industry with CityU students when he was an adjunct professor for the College of Business some years ago. He also worked with the College of Business to allow students in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme to visit his companies. He has set up scholarships that honour students for their outstanding academic performance through donations he has made to his alma mater.

The Hon Leung Chun-ying, Chairman of CityU Council, commended Dr Chan for his dedication to education and his contributions to society. He encouraged students to learn from Dr Chan. “I hope students can model themselves on Dr Chan. He faces adversity with a positive attitude, works hard for improvement, volunteers for public service and contributes to his alma mater,” he said.

Dr Chan added, “Knowledge is an asset. I hope CityU students not only acquire knowledge during their university studies, but also learn about the philosophy of life from leaders throughout society. In the future, they will work hard to live up to the expectations of the University for the benefit of the community.”

Professor Way Kuo, CityU President, sincerely thanked Dr Chan for supporting CityU and the education sector. “Dr Chan is fully committed to the development of education. To nurture our future leaders, he has set up scholarships that encourage students to work hard and achieve outstanding academic performances. We are grateful to Dr Chan’s donations to support the University’s long-term development and his sponsorship of students’ all-round development,” Professor Kuo said.

The John Chan Lecture Theatre, located on the 4th floor of the Academic Building, has a floor area of about 160 square metres to accommodate an audience of 120. Equipped with advanced multi-media audio and visual equipment, the venue is suitable for holding talks, teaching and other types of academic activities.
