The President’s Cabinet visited the City University Marine Fish Culture Facility, an experimental mariculture platform, at O Pui Tong in the northeastern waters of Hong Kong on 21 September.
This innovative mariculture facility aims to promote interdisciplinarity in research, learning and knowledge transfer in accord with our Strategic Plan 2015–2020.
In addition to the production of marketable fish under a license issued by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), it also serves as a field station to support in situ scientific research for disciplines related to sustainability, public health, food safety, and others.
As a state-of-the-art facility, it is equipped with a real-time observatory system on the water quality of aquaculture environment to provide early warnings about water quality deterioration and harmful algal blooms (commonly referred to as red tides). Furthermore, research on integrated multi-trophic aquaculture will be undertaken to develop and optimise marine fish culture, while minimising the impact on the environment.
The Cabinet also made profitable use of the 3-hour journey to and from the fish raft to hold a regular Cabinet meeting on the boat.
