UK high-school student enjoys university life at CityU

A British high-school student has spent the past two weeks at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) experiencing our world-class educational offerings and facilities, as well as our city’s unique lifestyle and culture, after winning a competition organised by the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office in London.

Natalie Dearden from The Blue Coat School in Oldham in the north of England has been finding out about environmental conservation in Hong Kong with help from researchers from the Department of Biology and Chemistry.

Specifically she has been discovering more about horseshoe crabs through our Aquatic Science Laboratory.

“This was the first time that I had seen the horseshoe crabs,” said Natalie, who won the competition “Hong Kong: A Dream Destination for University Study”.

“Everyone said that they were very ugly and I wouldn’t like them, but I thought they were really lovely. It was interesting to feed them and understand why it was so important to conserve them,” she said.

Natalie also had the chance to understand more about environmental preservation and the sustainability in Hong Kong through visits to Mai Po Nature Reserve, the Veterinary Centre at Ocean Park and Zero Carbon Building.

She also praised CityU’s facilities, staff and students, and said she felt that communication was a lot easier than she had expected.
