The City University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Research Institute (CityUSRI) set a new record of receiving a total amount of grant of nearly RMB66.2 million in 2016, an increase of RMB26.3 million over 2015, representing a jump of 66%.

Funding worth RMB32 million was received from the Shenzhen Municipal Government for 24 projects in materials, marine, biomedical, communication and advanced manufacturing studies.

The funding amount received was the highest among all research institutes set up in Shenzhen by Hong Kong universities, reflecting CityU’s excellent research capability and its close collaboration with the mainland’s hi-tech industry for research projects.

In addition, with a grant worth RMB4 million from the Shenzhen Municipal Government, CityUSRI set up the Shenzhen Key Laboratory for Prestressed and Surface Engineering of Aerospace Materials and Components.

It is CityUSRI’s fifth Shenzhen key laboratory to be sponsored by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, making it top among Hong Kong universities in terms of the number of key laboratories.

At an Appreciation Ceremony held earlier by the Technology and Innovation Committee of the Shenzhen Municipality, CityUSRI was honoured with the title of Outstanding Research Institute for the 4th consecutive year due to its excellent performance in technology research, professional training, recruitment of post-doctoral academics, research facilities and organising large-scale conferences and forums.

Altogether 58 prestigious research institutes in Shenzhen were evaluated by the Committee. CityUSRI claimed top place with 74 awards for technology projects at the national, provincial, municipal and individual levels.

Ms Qiu Xuan, Party Secretary of the Technology and Innovation Committee of the Shenzhen Municipality, expressed her gratitude to CityUSRI for its contributions to the development of professionals, technological innovation and economical and social advancement for Shenzhen.

Professor Lu Jian, Vice-President (Research and Technology) of CityU, said CityUSRI is an important platform on the mainland for technological development, knowledge innovation, development and recruitment of high-calibre professionals, incubation of technological projects and transfer of technological achievements.

“It is also a communication window between Shenzhen and Hong Kong for the exchange of knowledge in technology and academic and cultural studies. I hope the two cities can further strengthen exchanges and boost the transfer of technological achievements in various academic disciplines in order to contribute to the economic advancement in both places,” he added.
