CityU to bestow honorary fellowships on three distinguished persons

 

Three distinguished persons will be bestowed honorary fellowships by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) in recognition of their significant contributions to the development of, and service to, the University and the community.

They are Professor Sun Kai-lit Cliff, BBS, JP; Mr Herbert Hak Kong Tsoi, BBS, JP; and Dr Yip Kit-chuen. The Honorary Fellow Presentation Ceremony will be held in September.

Professor Sun, Chairman of Kinox Enterprises Limited and Kin Hip Metal and Plastic Factory Limited, is an established entrepreneurial industrialist in the business of the manufacturing, wholesale, and distribution of kitchenware, household and other products. After attaining education and work experience from Canada in the 70’s, he took over the family business and in 1980, he established the Kinox brand and boosted the competitiveness of the products in the retail market. 

In addition to business, Professor Sun is active in public service. He has been an active member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in the Shenzhen, Ningbo and Zhejiang committees at different times since 1994 until now. He served as the Chairman of the Hong Kong Exporters' Association from 2002 to 2006, Chairman of Federation of Hong Kong Industries from 2009 to 2011, and Chairman of Hong Kong Q- Mark Council from 2003 to 2009. He has also been appointed to many public positions by the HKSAR Government. 

A staunch supporter of CityU, he is currently a CityU Court member, member of the Board of Governors and Honorary Vice-President of CityU Foundation, and Adjunct Professor of the College of Engineering. He was appointed Justice of the Peace in 2003 and was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the HKSAR Government in 2006.

Mr Tsoi is a partner at Herbert Tsoi & Partners, a law firm he established in 1999. Mr Tsoi read Law at University College London and returned to Hong Kong in 1976 to practice as a solicitor. A distinguished legal professional, he served as the President of The Law Society of Hong Kong between 2000 and 2002 and was admitted to the Roll of Honour of The Law Society of Hong Kong in 2016. He was appointed Justice of the Peace in 2001.

Mr Tsoi has served the community in various capacities, including as a member of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a member of the General Committee of Federation of Hong Kong Industries and a member of the Hospital Governing Committee of the United Christian Hospital. He is currently a member of the CityU Court and was a CityU Council member from 2013 to 2018. He also acts as an Honorary Legal Advisor to a number of Hong Kong non-government organisations. 

 Mr Tsoi was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2006 by the HKSAR Government for his meritorious public and community service, in particular for his contributions to promoting the development of the legal profession. 

Dr Yip, Chairman of G.E.W. International Corporation Limited, is a prominent industrialist and entrepreneur. His great insight and pursuit of innovation and research into industrial development earned him the Industrialist of the Year Award in 2017. He is currently Honorary President of the Hong Kong Electrical Appliance Industries Association, General Committee Member of the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong, Director of the Hong Kong Standards and Testing Centre, and President of The Sage of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries. 

Dr Yip is a passionate philanthropist with an unwavering commitment to education. He has donated generously to set up scholarships. Several buildings at universities and schools in Hong Kong and mainland China have been named in his honour. Hall 8 of the Student Residence at CityU was named after Mrs Yip as “Yip Yuen Yuk Hing Hall” in appreciation of the family’s generous support. 

Dr Yip is currently Honorary Patron of CityU Foundation. He was awarded the World Outstanding Chinese Award in 2006 for his contributions to the well-being of society.
