Well-being of children in stepfamilies assessed in CityU survey
Children in stepfamilies rate themselves as less happy than those in first-married families, according to a survey conducted by City University of Hong Kong (CityU).
The survey comparing the well-being of children from first-married families and remarried families was conducted by CityU’s Department of Applied Social Sciences (SS) and St. James' Settlement, a non-governmental charitable organisation in Hong Kong. Altogether 340 first-married families and 47 remarried families were interviewed. The aim of the project is to identify the challenges faced by stepfamilies.
The interviewees in the survey were mainly primary 4 to 6 children, said Dr Sylvia Kwok Lai Yuk-ching, Associate Professor in SS.
They needed support if their parents got divorced because the experience impacted their well-being. “Parents should pay serious attention to this matter,” Dr Kwok said.
