Professor Way Kuo, President of City University of Hong Kong (CityU), Professor Frank Chang Mau-chung, President of National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), and Mr Wu Mi-cha, Director of the National Palace Museum (NPM) in Taipei appointed this February, met on 2 June to discuss how to collaborate on the new project “Digitising Palace Museum”.

Professor Li Han-lin, Chair Professor of the Institute of Information Management at NCTU, presented the three main objectives of the project: i) to compile a list of important Chinese paintings stored in the NPM and another 14 art galleries around the world; ii) to develop a protocol that can be commonly used for keeping the information of all these paintings in the world; and iii) to establish a global platform appropriate for operating in a 5G environment and artificial intelligence.

After the first collaboration “Rebuilding the Tong-an Ships New Media Art Exhibition” in 2015, CityU has further worked with the NPM to organise the “Giuseppe Castiglione – Lang Shining New Media Art Exhibition” and the “ANiMAL: Art Science Nature Society” exhibition to bring a wonderful viewing experience and inspiration.

The latest collaboration, the ANiMAL exhibition, won a Gold Prize at the MUSE Awards at the Alliance of American Museums Convention in 2019. It is expected that the project will further strengthen collaborations on using technology for the novel presentation of artworks.

The meeting of 2 June was also attended by Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Chief-of-Staff of CityU; Professor Chen Sin-horng, Senior Vice President of NCTU; Professor Henry Lu Horng-shing, Vice-President for Academic Affairs of NCTU; and Mr Hsu Hsiao-te, Chief Curator of Department of Education, Exhibition and Information Services, NPM.
