Mathematics whiz honoured

Professor Philippe G Ciarlet, Professor (Chair) of Mathematics at the City University of Hong Kong, has been  awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Bucharest, Romania, in recognition of his outstanding research and academic achievements. Numerical analysis, computational mechanics and mathematical modeling are among his research interests. Renowned Nobel prize-winners such as Professor  Samuel C C Ting, the physicist who discovered a new subatomic particle, the J/psi particle, and Mr Shimon Peres, former Prime Minister of Israel, are among those who have been honoured with the same title.

A world-renowned mathematician, Professor Ciarlet was made Honorary Professor of Fudan University in Shanghai (1994); Doctor Honoris Causa, Ovidius University of Constantza, Romania (1999); and Professor Emeritus, Université Pierre et Marie Curie (2002), and he has been awarded membership by various prestigious academies, such as the Academia Europaea, the RomanianAcademy and the FrenchAcademy of Sciences, just to name a few. He received the French Legion of Honor in 1999, in addition to his other awards, including the Grand Prize by the FrenchAcademy of Sciences (1989) and the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award (1996). Professor Ciarlet received his Doctor’s degree at the University of Paris. Before joining CityU in 2002, he had been a Professor at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, for 28 years. Previously, he had worked at the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées, Paris, the I.N.R.I.A., and the École Normale Supérieure, Paris. 

At CityU, apart from focusing on his research, Professor Ciarlet also teaches postgraduate courses in Advanced Partial Differential Equations. He is the Deputy Director of CityU’s Liu Bie Ju Centre for Mathematical Sciences.
