Veteran journalists discuss One Country Two Systems and the media

The topic under discussion was “The distortion of One Country Two Systems from changes in media” at a public seminar on 18 January organised by the Department of Public Policy at City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

Guest speakers included former Ming Pao Chief Editor and current Chief Operating Officer of Medianet Holdings Limited Mr Kevin Lau Chun-to, and Public Policy Fellow at CityU’s Department of Public Policy and former producer and host of Radio Television Hong Kong’s City Forum Mr Tse Chi-fung. The seminar attracted a full house.

Mr Lau talked about changes in the Hong Kong media under the One Country Two Systems, and commented on related public policies. He said that differences under the two systems existed objectively and that the Hong Kong media should serve the local population by reflecting mainstream ideas within Hong Kong’s system.

When political ideology becomes a major consideration for media and public policies, it impacts market competition, the quality of TV programmes, as well as public choices and the development of the media industry. This was the risk that One Country Two Systems had to face, Mr Lau said.

Senior Teaching Fellow of the Department of Public Policy Dr Cheung Chor-yung delivered some welcoming remarks at the seminar, and presented a souvenir to Mr Lau.
